Things to do in the Area!
Old Lyme
Florence Griswold Museum- A museum of (mostly) American Impressionism in a charming old house.
Bowerbird- Cute gift-y shop.
Old Saybrook
Home of the Amtrak station, the closest Starbucks, and some excellent food! Located approximately 8 minutes from the Johnston home, though if pressed, Helen can get to the Amtrak station in 6.
Johnny Ad’s- Helen and Bryan’s favorite fried seafood shack. Located on a very un-pretty part of Rt. 1. Don’t let the location deter you! And get the fried scallops – they’re perfect.
Fromage- If Helen didn’t decide on graduate school, she’d have tried to convince owner Christine (be sure to say hello!) to let her open a location of this shop in the city. One of the very best cheese and gourmet and gift shops in the world. Across the street from Johnny Ad’s.
Madison
A bit south on I-95, Madison is a small, delightful town about 25 minutes away from Old Lyme with a near-perfect bookstore, and the beach!
RJ Julia Independent Booksellers- A very, very good small independent bookstore in nearby Madison, CT -- another adorable nearby town! A must-go for Helen & Bryan whenever they’re in the area.
Hammonasset Beach State Park- The good beach!
Essex
Essex is located just across the river from the Johnston house, approximately 12 minute away. Super charming with lots of lovely shops, and home of the below!
Connecticut River Museum- If you’re into boats, history, or America, this is the place for you.
Griswold Inn- The food is pretty bad, but it’s a great atmosphere for a beer. Has been in continuous operation since 1776, which we hear was a pretty good year for America.
Essex Steam Train & River Boat- If you want to ride an old timey train, or a boat, this is the place to do it.
Haddam
Gilette Castle- Historic, medieval style home located roughly 15 minutes from the Johnston home.
Mystic
Famous for fish and pizza, Mystic has an adorable main strip, complete with saltwater taffy and ice cream. Located approximately 25 minutes from the Johnston home.
Mystic Aquarium- A world-class aquarium.
Mystic Pizza- The location that inspired one of Helen’s very favorite movies. But, this is mostly an excuse to get you an address on the main drag of Mystic, Ct – an adorable nearby town.

Bicycling
If you’re interested in a ride, or a route, or a few epic riding stories, be in touch with Mark, Helen’s father. He is obsessive in the very best way. Maybe he’ll point you toward the hilly ride he took Bryan on the first time they rode together. (helenandbryan6615@gmail.com for his contact information.)
